Karas files for Mayor, opens office, sets kickoff event

Former Ninth District Alderman Pete Karas today filed his declaration of candidacy for the Racine mayoral election. Karas is the first of the announced candidates for mayor to open an office and a campaign website, what he calls the first steps in what will be "an active, professional, and ambitious campaign." His campaign kickoff event is scheduled Sunday.

His campaign statement said:
“I am running for mayor because I care deeply about the Racine community. Since the special election was announced, I have been moved by the outpouring of support from my neighbors, colleagues, and friends. With their encouragement and their input, I am prepared to run a campaign committed to local jobs, safe streets, responsive government, and essential services.”

Karas emphasized the importance of community involvement in his campaign, and reaffirmed his belief that the best way to become a good mayor is to reach out, listen to, and work with the people of Racine. Karas also vowed to respond to all questions and suggestions posted through his website and he invites any community member to call or stop by his campaign office with feedback and input.

The People for Pete Karas office is at 521 6th St., and will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. “I want to be the most accessible candidate running for Mayor, and the outstanding volunteers who will be staffing our office and operations will make that possible,” he said.

Those who wish to learn more or support the campaign are invited to his kickoff event Sunday, Feb. 22, at Park Six, 500 6th St. The event, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. will also serve as Pete’s 50th birthday celebration.

“I couldn’t be more proud to have spent my 50 years as a resident of Racine and I hope to have the chance to work with the people our community by serving as their Mayor,” he said.

  1. I want to just go out and hug someone, drink warm cocoa and sing "Kumbaya".

  3. Pete Karas is a sneaky weasel-he will tell you what you want to hear but then do his own thing. He is not as transparent as he seems.

  4. Pete Karas-

    1. Will you submit to a drug test?

    2. Will you be leading the pledge of allegience at the council meetings as mayor-I have nevr seen you say the pledge.

    3. Would you object if the city council meetings would begin with a prayer?

  5. Pete Karas used to be my alderman. He was not effective at all. No to Pete Karas as Mayor.

  6. Why would you ask if he wants to start the council meetings out with a prayer? If something like that were to happen, it would be the council members to vote for it, the mayor can't just make it happen. And quite frankly, I don't think we should be mixing church and religion with city council.

  8. You folks are being a bit hard on Pete. I've known him an worked with him for a long time and he is a straight-shooter who wants what is best for Racine. He is the only candidate who will really make the changes we need. We need out-of-the-box thinking and leadership.

And Anon 6:04 you must not know him if you ask about drugs. He never touches the stuff. Nice try at the rumor thing, though.

Is he perfect no man is but he loves Racine and has a vision for the City. Something we need. We also need someone to clean up City Hall from the Becker Good old boys. Public trials followed by firing squads all on CAR 25

  10. No attempt to sling mud at Mr. Karas or anyone else here, but why not drug tests for elected officials and those running for office? Isn't the position of mayor a little more important than, say, bus driver? It always amazes me how skewed our values are.

  11. Mr. Karas, who claims to be honest and transparent still has not come on here to answer legitimate questions. Instaed he has allowed his supporters to defend him. three questions:

Will you submit to a drug test?

Do you think that marijuana is an illegal drug?

Will you lead the pledge of allegiance when you are mayor?

and as a bonus, when our men and women are sent off to war, will you as mayor send them off if invited to do so.

Come on Pete, where ever you are, you can respond.

  12. To the anonymous coward,
Why would anyone respond to you, anymore than they would respond to the crude graffiti you are the modern version of.

Oh, did I mention you are a coward? No? Oh, you are a coward.

  13. I like what Pete is doing for alternative energy. We need an alternative to the monopoly that WE enjoys. I do not think he will be a good mayor. We need someone strong on finances. We need jobs and industry. We do not need higher taxes and more spending.
