Wheaton-Franciscan closing its dermatology clinic

Wheaton-Franciscan is shutting down its dermatology department in Racine and replacing it with a new partnership and three skin care clinics.

The clinic, at 3811 Spring St., will close in March. Dr. Ronald Smits is retiring, and his partner, Dr. Melinda McCord, is leaving Wheaton-Franciscan to pursue opportunities on the east coast. Smits' last day is March 13. McCord's last day is March 20.

Wheaton-Franciscan is partnership with Great Lakes Dermatology, which is accepting new patients at its offices in Racine and Pleasant Prairie. Doctors at the clinic include: Dr. Steven Armus, Dr. James Lynott and Dr. Martha Arroyo.

The hospital system also announced three new specialized clinics, including:
  • Acne Care Clinic, 3801 Spring St. The clinic is a partnership with family Dr. Rudy Byron. Physician Assistant Kelly Schneider will address adult and teen acne issues. She's available on Wednesdays.
  • Psoriasis Care, 3811 Spring St., Suite 301. This clinic is a partnership with rheumatologist Dr. Thomas Murphy. Physican Assistant Tracy Nelson will continue her work with psoriasis patients. Phototherapy treatment will be available at this location.
  • Physician Assistant Kelly Schneider will work with Dr. Michael Sweet to provide skin cancer and lesion care. Schneider is available Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Her office is in Wheaton-Franciscan's Atrium building.

  2. Dr. McCord was awesome - I will miss having her as a doctor.

Great Lakes? No thanks. Anyone have a good dermatologist out there?

  3. How about bringing Ken Pechman back to town? He is an outstanding dermatologist and academician.

Oooops, I forgot. Wheatron Franciscan chased him out of twon - - twice!

He now practices in Green Bay.

  5. Don't bother with Great Lakes Dermatology. Went for adult acne, not impressed.

  6. I have been very impressed with Great Lakes and with one doctor in particular. I recommended them highly.

  7. Great Lakes Dr Steven Armus was arrested earlier this year with a bunch of cocaine and money

  8. Can't recommend Great Lakes. Armus merely gave me some "ointment" for an infected cyst--that, a year later, cost me over $3000 to have excised (by a general surgeon). (And that was only after I'd spent several months, and hundreds of dollars, consulting with his sidekick, Lynott.) For anything serious, give them both a wide berth.

  9. I agree, bring back Dr. Pechman! He was excellent in his field, and knew to refer to Dr. Manish Gharia for the Mohs method of surgical removal of cancer cells. I have not been able to find another dermatologist that performed the Mohs method and left such minimal scars. I now have 3 other scars that are horrendous in comparison. Bring back Dr. Pechman so I can once again get a referral to Dr. Gharia, both the best!

  12. I've been a long time patient of Great Lakes and would recommend any of the Dr's or PA's there. Their staff is always friendly and I wouldn't go to any other dermatologist but them! After years of suffering with many skin problems and many different dermatologists, they were able to clean up my skin problems very quickly!

  13. The staff has always been fabulous at Great Lakes, but Dr. Armus has been inappropriate with several women, including myself. My hair dresser even knew of his reputation with many of his women patients who were also clients of his.
