Second candidate files to run against Racine Alderman Jim Kaplan

The Insider News is reporting a third candidate will run for the City Council's fourth district this spring.

Sherrie Lawson is jumping into the race to take on incumbent Jim Kaplan and challenger Ken Lumpkin, who also owns the Insider News. Lawson's entry sets up a Feb. 16 primary to narrow the field to two candidates.

The general election is April 6.

  2. Kaplan I think no longer has the fire to run for office.

  4. Kaplan will always be remembered for the "sneaky" no parking signs he had his city buddies put up outside his home, causing all kinds of problems for the Janes School teachers. Don't know if Lumpkin will beat him however. It would be nice to see Kaplan humbled.

  5. Just FYI, Kaplan never went through with the parking signs - and that was quite awhile ago.

  6. Dustin, Just an FYI, HE DID IN FACT go through with the signs. Would you like me to cut and paste the JT articles for you?? Your comment about "That was quite a while ago" means it's OK???? Am I understanding you correctly???

I don't have time right now, but when I return home from work (some of us still actually work for a living, IMAGINE THAT!!), I will put the articles up for you. After doing so, I will demand an apology from you.

    Thank you

  7. Kaplan did get the signs in 2006, but then withdrew the request and the city removed the signs.

    Here's the story.

  8. The signs show what sort of person we are dealing with. You cannot expect respect of the people when you will not live as the people do. He needs to deal with the city and its restrictions like the rest of us. Makes me wonder what else he feels above the law on. That sort of person is a bad fit for city council.

  9. Anonymous, but not accusing anyone of anything or asking for anything1/06/2010 1:48 PM

I'm just curious; what is the proper etiquette for apologizing to someone named Anonymous?

  10. That ridiculous thing again? Kaplan asked for a (one) spot. The city commission took it further.

    Let it go.

  11. Dustin, an apology is forthcoming I hope; anonymous or not. As a journalist, you should research findings before making statements that may threaten your credibility as such.

I find it interesting that because this was done 3-4 years prior that a couple bloggers think it should simply be dismissed.

I am fearful that because Kaplan did in fact engage in this underhanded behavior; that perhaps larger more important issues regarding this city may have also been handled in this manner.

    God bless.

  12. Parking sign issue? Hopefully there will be quality discussion and debate during the 'campaign'.

  13. This is actually the article that Dustin should have posted.

I especially like the part where Kaplan whines about not being able to cut his grass because the teachers park their cars in front of his house too close to the curb.

    VERY disturbing article IMHO.

  14. If your satisfied with actual serious issues being resolved in city hall by possible shady measures, you're a clown.

You're right, thank god this was only parking issues. I cringe to think about what hard working, over-taxed, law abiding city residents aren't aware of.

Tell the teachers at Janes School this is/was no big deal. If it doesn't affect you, it's OK, right?? People like you have ruined this city.

  15. Where's my apology Dunstan???

  16. I have known Jim Kaplan for many years, he is an ethical stand up guy. He made one mistake with the parking signs - lets move on to some real issues.

  17. Hey Anon, You have a real serious mental problem demanding an apology. None is warranted. You obviously have some serious issues that only a professional can deal with.

I don't see Kaplan winning, I don't see the "fire" or enthusiasum being present. So, it should be an interesting race. When it comes to Lumpkin, sometimes you get someone who is perpetually running for any office and the voters look at the name and say "him again?" and move on.

Should be interesting and Dustin, don't you dare apologize.

  18. Alderman Kaplan has resolved the parking issues with the Janes Staff. We have all moved forward in the best interest of students. Alderman Kaplan has now become an advocate for our school by contributing his time as a volunteer within the school and participates in our school activities. We appreciate his support;

    Deborah Coca
    Principal

  19. I am new to the community and originally being from Chicago a stupid parking spot is a big deal here - that is pretty laughable. One thing I did find was that Kaplan is actually canvassing the neighborhood himself. I got to meet him and actually talk to him. Sherrie has never knocked on my door and I have no idea what she is like. The never ending answer to throw more money at education is typical of teacher though but money is not the answer to our education problems in this country. It is taking personal responsibility by parents, students, and teachers. Creating more exercise programs at the tax payers expense NO really we have parks and a lake front bike trails - people will get out if they want to ... if they want to focus on exercise make sure that all of the schools have phys-ed everyday (I know that isn't true of the public schools in Chicago).
