Turner confirms he'll resign Assembly seat if elected mayor

We asked Bob Turner's campaign to clarify if or when Turner will leave the Assembly if elected mayor. Here's their response:
If elected, Bob would stay until the budget is finished and then would resign from his Assembly seat. He is committed to being Mayor and understands the time it will take if elected. His knowledge and experiences allow him to lead on day one.
So when will Turner be a full-time mayor? Gov. Jim Doyle signed the state's 2007-09 budget on Oct. 19, 2007. He signed the 2005-07 budget on July 25, 2005.

This year's state budget should finish early because the Democrats control the budget process. So it's likely Turner, if elected, will fill both the mayor's job and his Assembly job for about two months.

Turner's statement is consistent with the statement he made when announcing his run for mayor. On Feb. 22, Turner said:
I am committed to the job of mayor. If the people of Racine choose me to serve as their mayor, I will resign my position in the state assembly as soon as the state budget is passed.

  2. This guy is ridiculous...19 years in Madison and still no one can answer the question of "what has he done to improve the quality of life for the residents of Racine?" C'mon people this is more of what we just don't need in Racine. Wake up would ya?!?

  3. How can he lead the city of Racine if he is doing something else?

  4. Bob will use your tax dollars to support his union buddies. Look at his supporters and that "rally" tomorrow. If elected Bob will raise your taxes, guarenteed. Has he done anything else while he's been in Madison?

I'm being more than a bit cynical here, but a question the voters should consider is: Where can Turner do the LEAST damage? In the Legislature or as mayor?

Yeah, I know, not a great choice.

John Dickert? No way! Project John Dickert has been involved in include: 1) Pointe Blue, John claimed dozens of reservations, all smoke and mirrors, 2) River Bend Loft Condos on 6th and Marquette, 12 units sold out of 58 units, currently in foreclosure on the remaining unsold units, 3) redevelopment of apartment building at 15th and Main St. to 16 condos, after over 1 year, none are sold. Is this the track record Racine wants to showcase as our future?

  11. Joyce Smith, please get off these blogs. Quit trashing Dickert at every chance you get. The Turner "machine" is disgusting.

  12. No surprise that Turner/cronies have to talk about negative things - he has nothing positive to say about his own record because he's never done anything - 18-19 years as Racine's state rep and he's never even initiated anything for Racine? Imagine him as Mayor - he'll either be out golfing every day or in Madison hanging out with his union buddies.

    Anon 8:33pm,

Come on!! Really, you are THAT lazy? Can we look forward to "cut and paste mud" all over the blogs?! You are THAT bereft of ideas you have to reuse your material (and bad material at that) then drop it everywhere? Bravo on that sort of work...you should win an award. It takes real brains to learn how to utilize a mouse correctly. I am seriously in awe of you...you should teach.

I expect more from this place.

  14. 8:33 you relaize you posted that in two different blogs right? I thought that you would be a little more smarter than that but then again it just goes to show how low people will get when they have no accomplishments to run off of themselfs. Yeah Dickert's projects aren't doing that well but at least he is doing something for racine. what has turner done for us? nothing

  15. Charles and Kurt, The reason for the double post is because I would like to know where the $28 milion in development, that John claims he is responsible for, is located. I have been asking this question for weeks on various blogs and have yet to receive an answer. If I can receive a response identifying where these developments are, I could easily become a Dickert supporter.
Charles, I am far from lazy, I am looking for an answer. Your attack on my intelligence is forgiven. I just want the best man to win.
Kurt, I'm not sure how to respond to your comment, other than have a great day!

Have you contacted the Dickert campaign? Asking fellow anonymous bloggers isn't the best way to get answers to your questions.

  17. The budget process could take until Septermber to complete, it's happened before. Turner is going to retain his seat in Assembly until budget is over. ETHICAL PROBLEM HERE - He is running for mayor and raising money from special interest groups, some of which attended his campaign office opening tonight, (saw it with my own eyes). It is illegal to raise money for a campaign while you are in teh budget process Bob Turner. Why should we put up with this? All he wants to do is pump up his retirement because he'll be getting 2 salaries and retirement based on that. As a tax payer I am appaled that he can get away with this. For the sake of our city vote for Dickert, if even to keep Turner out of our pockets.

  18. Anon 11:41. Let's put at least one part of your argument to bed for the last time. You write: "It is illegal to raise money for a campaign while you are in the budget process, Bob Turner."

We've looked into this, and reported it before. Here's what we wrote on Jan. 26 -- you could look it up:Questions about "...a new policy adopted by Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan prohibiting state representatives from raising campaign funds during consideration of the state budget., which is sure to overlap the campaign period of a mayoral race.

We looked into that and learned -- from Phillip Walvak, communication director for the Speaker's office -- that the change in the State Assembly's policy manual prohibits the raising of campaign funds for future Assembly races. "The intent was never to make it impossible for them to hold a non-partisan other office," Walvak said. "It's just a policy that the Assembly will impose on itself for candidates' re-election bids for the State Assembly."

    Can we move on?
