Holiday shopping deals in Downtown Racine

You may have heard: Friday is something of a major shopping day.

While Best Buy, Walmart and other major stores are inundating us with deals on flat screen TVs and MP3 players, every store is counting on the legions of "Black Friday" shoppers to make some money this year.

Being a local source for news, we like to focus on the local stores and businesses trying to compete with the major retailers (that's no knock on the major retailers, it's just judging from TV, radio, email, mail, etc. they don't need much help on the publicity front).

Below is a list of the Friday deals we know of at Racine-owned shops. If you have deals to add, post them in the comments or contact us at:

  1. Merry Christmas!

  2. Keep the money in town, spend it locally!

  3. Do they have special Black Friday hours??

  4. Nice picture Pete, what lens did you use?

  5. Paul: Thanks!

Lens is an 18-70mm, 3.8 Nikon, the kit lens that came with the D70 years ago.

Picture was shot with the camera held firmly against a street post for stability, at 1/10th of a second, f4.5; 29mm. (Shoulda brought my tripod...)

Here's a good trick, by the way: Many jpegs on the 'net, including mine on our main page and on our blogs, have some or all of the EXIF data attached. In other words, if your browser has an EXIF viewer plug-in (as Firefox does), you can instantly check what the photographer did: camera, lens, f-stop, speed, sometimes ISO, etc. Very useful as a learning tool.

Firefox's free EXIF plug-in is here

  6. Thanks for the gift buying cheat-sheet Dustin. Very helpful and positive.

  7. Merry Xmas!

  8. Don't forget Greens and Goods downtown. This is one of the nicest shops downtown and is a great place to buy a gift. They have items in all price ranges. Very nice and unique ideas. Check them out!

  9. My family and I had a great time shopping in Downtown on Black Friday. Thanks to the Racine Post for the suggestion.
