'Grumpy's Grub' opening in former pizza place on Lathrop Ave.

A new family-style restaurant with a liquor license is poised to open in the former Geo's Pizza on Lathrop Ave.

"Grumpy's Grub and Suds" received approval for a liquor license Monday night from the city's Public Safety and Licensing Committee.

Owner Karley Barcalow, of Racine, plans to open Sept. 1. She'll employ about 15 people at the restaurant, which will be open from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Barcalow described the menu as a traditional breakfast with handmade dinner special every day. "We want to keep it more of the home-cooked style," she said.

Barcalow brings a lifetime of experience to the restaurant. She started working as a dishwasher at 16 years old and worked her way up to waitress, manager and the owner of "Curt's Carryout and Delivery" in Kenosha. She now manages the Denny's Restaurant at the corner of Washington Ave. and Green Bay Road.

The restaurant site is basically an empty building, Barcalow said. She's installing a new kitchen with new ranges, and will receive a liquor license (pending full City Council approval) once the kitchen is approved by the city Health Department.

The committee approved the liquor license unanimously. The council will take it up next week.

  1. I would hesitate to go to this new place if she had any hand in the Denny's. The only two times I have ever been in that restaurant, I've had the worst service I've had anywhere in town.

  6. I'm hoping that Ms. Barcalow reads the comments on this article. I was wondering if/when applications would be available? I'm an experienced bar manager/bartender and I am very interested in applying. Thank you

  14. HORRIBLE!! I had dinner here with my mother and we ordered the bbq chix wings for a app, they were very tough and dry almost tasting like a old frozen store bought item. My mother had the pork chop dinner which were two measly dried up chops with a teaspoon of gravy and a baked potatoe with NO REAL BUTTER!! She askd for more gravy and the waitress brought over a lumpy bowl of a mystery gravy that was different than the gravy on the chops. My Mt.dew tasted like a genaric form of Dew and my not breaded chix parm sandwich was also dry and flavorless. I do not see this restaurant having a bright future if any future at all!!! hospital food tastes and looks better than this

One very mean person is writting all the negative stuff. Grumpys is a very fine family restaurant. The food is excellant and the staff is very good. Nothing in life is perfect, but there's an obvious person trying to hurt this restaurant. Must be somrthing personal and they use this format to spread their frustration and hate.
