Helding and Harding join mayoral race

Pete Karas was first to file a declaration of candidaacy for Mayor, but he won't be the last.

Already this afternoon, Jody Harding and Greg Helding made the trek to the City Clerk's office to join the race.

Jody Harding is a CPA, and a member of the Racine Taxpayers Association. She actually announced her candidacy on her blog on Aug. 22, although the full post appears to have been removed and the Continue Reading link goes nowhere. But the lede-in remains and it states:

After all the years of criticizing politicians, I suppose it was inevitable that I’d have to run for a government office one day. The forms have been filed, the announcement published… It’s official. I’m running for mayor.

I’m not sure if the butterflies in my stomach are excitement, or terror! For everyone who missed the press release, I’m posting it here. Continue Reading »

Greg Helding, 36, has been 11th District Alderman since 2005. He's a graduate of St. Catherine's High School and Marquette University, and works as a network engineer for Wisconsin Internet.

But stay tuned for more. Rep. Cory Mason said earlier this week he might run, and others who have expressed interest include Council President David Maack, 8th District Alderman Q.A. Shakoor, II and 13th District Alderman Jim Spangenberg. And I'm sure I'm missing half a dozen more...

  2. We need more people to step up to the plate and run for Mayor. We need an outsider, not one of the current or former aldermen. We also don't need any of former Mayor Smith's cronies either. This is a time for change in our great City. We've got problems to solve. We need to work together for the same purpose of rebuilding Racine and making it a better place to work and live. We need a person who is truly committed to the job of Mayor.

  3. No status quo. I agree we don't need any current alderman to be the next Mayor, but I believe Ron Thomas would be good for the City. He used to be an alderman.

  4. Ron Thomas would be a good choice. Anyone up to talking to him?

  5. What about a police officer or former police officer, fire figher or former fire fighter, or former City employee running for Mayor? These people understand the workings of the City. They've been taking job hits for some time and have seen what the past and current administrations were like. I bet they would know what waste to cut and the best way to get things done.

  6. What about Donnie Snow!

  7. He's too darn perty!

  8. Donnie Snow makes more money in his current position than he would as mayor. I would NOT like to see Helding as mayor. He sat back and condoned everything Becker wanted and kept quiet. He did not have a mind of his own, he did the mayor's bidding, nothing more.

  9. Again! What about Snow?

  10. Don Snow, Helding, Jody, all negatives.

  11. SNow makes more money now than he would as mayor, why would he want to give up what he has? Also, he really doesn't have what it takes to be mayor.

  13. Interesting ... there is nothing to file for at this time. The Council hasn't even decided how the position will be filled yet.

  14. Cory Mason cannot run. With the new rule the Assembly is going to pass baring fundraising once the budget is introduced, Cory would be prohibited from soliciting funds for a campaign for mayor.

  16. How about former Fire Chief John Hilmer? Remember, he also served as a county board supervisor prior to becoming Fire Chief. He is a straight-shooter. Is he still in town? Would he be interested?

  17. Hilmer is too damn rigid. He couldn't run the Fire Dept in any way but one way, his way and it didn't work well at all. He treated the firefighters poorly, was into power rather than discharging his duties in a responsible manner. Sorry, that he would make a poor mayor, unable to make it through rough times.

  18. Helding is part of the problem, so is Ben Hughes the city administrator.
