Police make arrest in case of newborn found dead in Perkins dumpster

Breanna Gering, 23, of Franklin, was arrested today at her home, accused of giving birth in Racine's Perkins Restaurant and then abandoning the infant in a nearby dumpster.

Charges include First Degree Reckless Homicide and Concealing the Death of a Child. Racine Police say Gering gave birth in Perkins' bathroom about 9 a.m. on Aug. 16, then placed the infant in a bag  in a garbage dumpster at the restaurant, 4915 Washington Ave.

That afternoon, Racine Police responded to the Emergency Room at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints hospital in Racine, where Gering had come for medical treatment. She reportedly displayed signs of recent childbirth, but was evasive with medical staff, who called the police. It  later was determined that Gering had, in fact, been pregnant, and the dead infant was discovered in the dumpster.

  1. this makes me really mad. Good people who can not have children would have loved to adopt that baby.

  5. I am incredibly sad about the loss of this child and for the poor decisions made by her/his mother. Pass the word, friends, tell your sisters and your daughters -- there is a safe, no-questions-asked way to give up your baby in the first 72 hours of life:

I am surprised by all the women and young girls who are NOT aware of this. We cannot bring this precious child back or save the mother from a lifetime of regret, but maybe we can change things for another mother and child...

Really, is this much different than a late term abortion?

  7. I agree with Denis. What is wrong with the laws of our country if she had killed it before it was born she wouldn't be facing homicide charges. Incredibly disturbing and heartbreaking however you look at it. Wish she had left it on my doorstep!

  8. The best way to stop the next desperate mother from making this choice is to make sure people know about the options.

I have an 8 year old that was left under the safe haven law. We did T.V. radio, newspapers and anything else we could do to promote the law. I prayed that we would never see this again. Why don't people know there are so many other options. This kills me inside.

  10. Denis you are correct, thier is no difference between what this girl did or what a Doctor could have done in a office, she could have avoided possiable murder charges if she would have made an apointment to see a Doctor to have an aboration. Anyone in this country that is for aboration has the "BLOOD" of all aborated chirldren on thier hands.

  11. I hope those of you that are anti abortion, never vote Democratic. If you do, your comments on abortion are worthless.

  12. I went to high school with this girl. This is wildly out of character for her...obviously she is not in her right mind. Be careful before you judge.

I agree with Anonymous, this girl is my boyfriend's neice & she made a very poor choice as young people do everyday in lots of ways. Do not be so quick to judge people...

  14. Susie - you've got to be kidding - throwing a child in a dumpster is a poor choice??? Where would have been a better place to dump the baby. This is 1st degree murder and she should be sentenced to the max.

  15. Has anyone stopped for a moment to consider she may be mentally ill? Everyone is so quick to judge, but obviously something is not right in her head. If she really truly didn't know she was pregnant, there's obviously other issues at hand and I can see why she freaked out. Hormones are a powerful thing. Leave the sentencing to the courts, okay? And leave the abortion discussion out of this. You clearly know nothing about the circumstances surrounding partial-birth abortion. It is not performed because someone suddenly decides they don't want the baby, it's for when the baby is too ill to survive on it's own.

    You people make me sick.

  16. I went to school with her as well and have known her since I was 8. This isn't like her at all and I know she wasn't in her right mind. There's no way.

  17. Ive know brianna for a couple years and she is not this type of person. she never harmed a fly. She was not in the right state of mind when she did this. I dont know why she would do it but now she is being punished for it. I just feel bad for her other daughter who is three and wont ever prolly see her mom.

  18. I think the abortion comments are justified. Had she killed this baby prior to it taking any breaths our laws would protect her and the doctor and not the child. However, I do believe she must be mentally ill.
