Don't count Police Chief Kurt Wahlen among the supporters of Post Prom. From his perspective, the annual event is a security nightmare.
"It worries me," Wahlen said Tuesday during the Police and Fire Commission meeting. "We can't cover all of our bases."
During this year's Post Prom, an 18-year-old man was arrested after shooting a handgun in the air below the YMCA. Another teenager got a citation for carrying a BB gun into the bleachers outside of Post Prom.
Wahlen invited members of the commission to watch next year's Post Prom from the police and fire departments' command vehicles outside of Festival Hall.
"It's a life-changing experience," Wahlen said. "It's depressing. I think it's depressing."
He said girls, in particular, act inappropriately. Two young women were taken from the scene in ambulances. At least one of the incidents involved drinking; paramedics found a teenager lying under a picnic table, abandoned by her friends.
"There's no ladies there, that's for sure," said Marie Black, a member of the Police and Fire Commission.
Maybe Wahlen should patrol the grounds on foot instead of sitting in a command vehicle watching a camera!
ReplyDeleteDoes this guy have a fetish with cameras or something? I'm not joking either. All we hear about are the 10 defective cameras around the city, his plans to buy 5 more (as if 10 bad ones weren't enough) and now he watches Prom-goers from a trailer. Very unusual if you ask me!
I agree with Chief Wahlen. I think it's great the the kids have a big blow out at the school year's end to celebrate, but is there some reason the city has to condone a drunken orgy?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Wahlen. Its gotten out of hand. Has anyone watched the motorcade? I'm surprised nobody has gotten seriously injured in that. The kids are hanging out of the cars and the cars are weaving in and out and driving quite fast. It all seems very dangerous.
ReplyDeleteSo whats wrong with sitting in a vehicle and watching on camera. I can see the motorcade from my living room window and don't need to be out on the sidwalk to see how crazy it is.
I was at post prom for quite awhile and Wahlen was RIGHT THERE, in front of the bleachers, in the bleachers, talking to people, checking on his staff, etc. IMHO, he has every right to say the things he is saying.

I think Ms. Black should worry about her personal life a little more, rather than one night of prom. How on gods earth can she be a fire/police commissioner??? Isn't she supposed to be held to "a higher standard" ???? Just curious.

ReplyDeleteWell is it depressing or not? You don't sound so sure of your own thoughts Chief Wahlen? Actually you sound about as sure of this as you did about the crime statistics in the city and we all know the stats you gave were proven to be wrong!!!

ReplyDeleteI agree with Wahlen, but let's take it a step further and get rid of the 4th of July fireworks/drunkfest. The parade itself doesn't seem to be too bad, but the behavior of citizens at the fireworks is disgusting. There are plenty of other fireworks in the area that people could attend. Just think of the money the city would save in overtime costs. How about it Chief?
ReplyDeleteI am surprised that none of the major news sources have reported that allegedly Chief Kurt Wahlen and his church (Calvary Memorial) helped bring in the alleged marijuana growers in Sturtevant. This was part of their Hmong program. Can the Racine Post investigate? If true, he should worry more about that than a kid's prom.
