Racine students rally for sensible climate change

Penguins danced and the crowd kept a giant inflated balloon of the earth aloft, as Racine rallied for sensible stewardship of our planet's environment this afternoon in Monument Square. The rally was one of perhaps 5,200 similar events taking place in 181 countries, during an international day of climate action.

To the stirring opening fanfare of Richard Strauss' Thus spake Zarathustra (better known as the theme of the "dawn of man" sequence in Stanley Kubrik's movie, 2001, a Space Odyssey), about 150 people, mostly Racine high school students, expressed their support for a new treaty on CO2 emissions they hope will come from the UN climate summit in Copenhagen in December.

The rally was marked by participation from most of the city's high schools. Students carried posters ("Go green, or go home," "No more coal" and -- this one carried by a penguin -- "Keep the ice under my feet"), and individual numbers which, when brought together, spelled out 350 -- the number of CO2 particles per million in the atmosphere that scientists consider safe, and the name of the organization behind today's activities, 350.org. The big 3 was made by students at Prairie; the 5 by Walden, the 0 by Horlick. Case High School students provided the earth balloon.

For an hour they gave festive, yet serious attention to this global issue, listening to a variety of speakers. The oldest, by far, was State Rep. Cory Mason, 36, who commended the students for taking on an issue "that sometimes feels so big there's nothing we can do." Mason pointed out that the U.S. "is the world leader in carbon emissions" -- that's not a good thing -- and said state government is working to reduce the state's carbon footprint. "We need more people like you holding us accountable."

Jeanette Morelan of Prairie School, a 14-year-old who won the Miss America's Outstanding Teen pageant this summer, said the students are "members of a national family... that dreams of making the air less polluted." She focused on "the power of one," noting that "one person generates more than 1,000 pounds of trash each year." But she also recalled Edward Everett Hale's statement, "I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something," telling the crowd, "now is the time for the next revolution.. .a revolution to save our planet."

Dakota Bowen, a junior at Walden,
declared that the proposed climate treaty "is too weak," and talked about Walden students' efforts, including their creation this summer of a rain garden. "Walden is working, but we need others. Politicians and world leaders need to hear our voices and make a change."

Thomas Aviles of Walden said it is crucial "to save the most important thing in our existence -- our planet." Jamie Racine of Milwaukee, the Midwestern youth delegate to the climate conference, also spoke.

Pictures from thousands of today's rallies are being shown on the Jumbotron in New York's Times Square. Aviles took Racine's "official" photo from the fourth floor of the Johnson Building overlooking Monument Square; that's where my picture at the top of this post was taken, too. Here's a short video from Times Square:

  2. And there is no proof that there is mad mad global warming, and I am not about to take Al Gore's word for it.

  3. Racine Rallies for Climate Change?

As of the 2000 census the city of Racine was 20.3% black and 14.0% hispanic/latino. Photos don't show that tableau of diversity. Why aren't these rallies more inclusive?

  9. Too bad those kids weren't doing something useful like collecting canned goods for the Food Bank. You can see that they're from families with more dollars than sense.

  11. Those of us who freeze each winter because we can't afford to heat our homes wish we could get some of that elusive "global warming," Maybe Prince Brattykins and Princess Bratanella ought to be doing charity work for HALO or helping our low-income seniors survive.

  12. In a town which leads the state in minority infant mortality, poverty and high school drop out rates, such a rally is ridiculous. Somebody please teach those privileged kiddies about the real problems in the real world.

  14. Global climate change is proven long time ago and even if you don't believe in global 'warming', how is it going to harm us by making our community better place to live.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Fighting poverty--not prancing around the square with a fancy balloon--will improve our community.

  16. Of course, environmental ballyhoo--not anti-poverty work--is what the corporate criminals who run this town want. Without lots of poor, desperate temps to exploit, the Waxtrash Corporate Crime Family wouldn't be able to buy more fiberglass cows, antique Silver Ghosts, seaplanes and modern art.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Helping our downtrodden temp workers instead of worrying about temperatures in the arctic would be nice. Only rich kids with no serious problems would fret about polar bears and penguins while people are suffering the ravages of poverty.

  18. The world needs ditch diggers too.

  19. Yeah, but let's hope those ditches won't be mass graves for executed corporate criminals. A class clash is coming--the first genuine revolution in the history of this sorry country. Pray that it may be a non-violent revolution.

  21. The silly bimbette in the tiara isn't the problem--her Waxtrash money-monarchs are. Have you noticed how the Waxies trot out environmentalism whenever they want to con us into thinking that they're humanitarians? Most people are more worried about heating their homes or apartments than they are about global warming. However, the Waxtrash Corporate Crime Family and its lackeys yammer about shrinking glaciers while the rest of us can barely keep warm.

  22. People are more important than penguins. If economic development eliminates those birds, most ordinary people won't weep.

  23. Those lily-white bozos and babes should be taken on a tour of Racine's less-choice neighborhoods. Then, perhaps, they'd rally against poverty and stop playing the Waxies' games.

  24. During the years leading up to the French Revolution, France had some of the strictest forestry and wildlife protection laws on record. The privileged classes had to have a pretty environment and lots of animal eye candy.(Even when the peasants were starving, they weren't allowed to shoot the deer which chomped away on their crops. The only ones who could kill the critters--and devour them--were the royals and nobles. Today's Waxtrash obsession with the environment and wildlife is all-too-typical of the elite's disdain for less-fortunate human beings.)

  28. To those of you who participated in the 350 activities day, I applaud you. To those who hide behind the name Anonymous and criticize and worse spread your feelings of real hate, I will merely consider the source as non-educated. Read your own comments.

You are calling it "Global Warming". Are you not aware that the term is "Global Climate Change?" Read the headline above. Read what professionals from all over the world say about it. People who make their living at it. You can not control thousands of different people's opinion, who work in the science of climatology, and in all different countries and still conclude it is some mass mind game. There is no conspiracy. Except in your head maybe.

You may honestly feel the way you do but why cut others down who are trying to do something positive? Does this say something about the naysayers? hmmmm

And think about this... What if, just what if you naysayers are wrong? Talk about guilt. You would have to deal with that and say to yourself, "I helped make this planet worse." Wouldn't it be better to side with those who would rather error on the side of those who might know better, the world wide climatologists?

I invite all those in Racine who would like to continue their "positive" participation by joining a world wide movement called "Transition". To help make a Positive transition to a world where Climate Change and Peak Oil are becoming more relevant. Just Click on the words "Transition Wisconsin" associated with this posting.

To those who participated in 350 day here in Racine, Transition Wisconsin would be proud to have you on board. To those under 18, please have your parent's permission.

  31. Very sad to see so many young indoctrinated USEFULL IDIOTS! I wish they could see that they are being used. The earth is cooling kids, there are people looking for power and wealth by perpetrating this CO2 hoax. Look at Gore's wealth that went from 1 to 110 million since being vice pres. You will never see Gore debate because he knows that he is wrong.

Don't believe that your breath is poisonous to the earth. If we fall for this nonsense, there is no facet of our lives that they will not take control over. It is a pure power play to knock the USA down and to get us to surrender our sovereignty over to the rest of the world.

Study what made our country great and don't get herded into giving away the gift of freedom you were blessed with. Think for yourself.

  33. The thought that we can destroy the plant is absurd. If we all went out in a nuclear war, man might be gone but the earth would return to normal eventually. If the indoctrinators want these kids to participate in the reduction of CO2, why don't they just tell them to shut up, breath less and plant a tree. Remember their is NOTHING in Revelations that speaks of man polluting himself to death. Our air is cleaner now than it has been in 75 years. There are more trees growing in the United States now then there was when Christopher Columbus landed in the Islands. DRILL BABY DRILL AND BUILD MORE NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS. That or teach these kids Communism.

  37. Dear Transition Wisconsin, Whether you call the problem "climate change" or "global warming," the temperatures on this planet have been going up and down for ages. By and large, mankind's activities have exerted minimal influence and impact. If privileged kiddies want to dance around in penguin suits and play with earth balloons and big blue numerals, the law allows them to make perfect fools of themselves. However, in view of our town's poverty problem and the suffering of our less-fortunate citizens, those golden girls and boys with pricey toys should have been collecting funds for HALO or gathering canned goods for the Food Bank.

It was fun watching the waxies drive to meetings in Oak Creek in their gas guzzling SUVs to protest air pollution from the proposed coal plant. No environmentally-friendly bus for the waxies!

The same people cook up a stew of toxic pesticides at Waxdale that would render this area unlivable for 150 years if it ever blew. Read up on pyrethroids and the other goodies that they brew out there. And then they have the gall to call themselves green and to sponsor events like this? Never mind the planet, I don't want a mosquito to mar our daughter's outdoor cotillion. And you rubes just eat this stuff up. Har har har.

  40. To be fair, the young eco-fools weren't responsible for this farce. Their teachers and a certain corporate crime family which peddles environmentally-safe products like this brand of ballyhoo. To the super-rich, penguins and polar bears outrank ordinary people. Since the opulent oppressors like to go on photo safaris all over the planet, cute beasties trump non-wealthy human beings. Although I don't despise penguins and polar bears, I won't cry when they're gone. The same applies to those seal pups the rich whine about while not giving a rap about the people who have to hunt them in order to survive. All in all, ecology is a millionaire and billionaire's racket.

  42. I've seen a lot of really senseless, stupid comments posted in this blog, but the vast majority posting on this article are about to take the cake.

I, myself, do not believe in global warming. It's a crock of BS just to line politicians and special interest group’s pockets. This planet is cyclic, it always has been and always will be until it dies a natural death. But to take this article so out of context as to make it a class issue and a racial issue is so far beyond stupid that it's no wonder the cowards that are posting use the Anonymous cloak to hide behind. What difference does it make what class or ethnic background someone is if they just want to make a statement about saving the planet (no matter how mistaken or ill informed they are about it). You racists and socialists need to get out of this country if all you can do is incite trouble. We know you want a war to erupt between the poor and the rich. The thing you don’t understand is that, by your standards, even the middle-class is considered “rich.” Which we aren’t. But, if you awake that sleeping giant and want to go to war with it with all your liberal, fascist, socialist and communist buddies, you’d better be ready to be enormously outnumbered and overwhelmed, and to die for that cause, because you will.

We, the average Americans, have been pushed to the limit. We are sick and tired of you lefties taking away our rights on damn near a daily basis, continuously attacking our 1st and 2nd and 4th and 10th amendments, turning the morals of this country upside down (homosexuality is good and normal (BS), abortion is a right and should be paid for by taxpayers (BS), victims are criminals and criminals are victims (BS), the Fed should run everything (BS), redistributing wealth from those who work hard to earn it to those who contribute nothing but could if they’d get off their fat butts and apply themselves (BS), and on and on and more BS after more BS). If it’s so terrible here, why don’t you leave? You’re a minority in this country. Keep pushing us and you’ll soon see just how minor you are.

Do you lefties wonder at all why it is that stores can’t keep ammo on their shelves (except Gander Mountain who so expensive no one wants to buy it)? It’s because people are stocking up so that when the sh*t hits the fan we can put an end to your socialist agenda once and for all. We are sick and tired of you constantly pitting the poor against everyone who has risen above it. We are sick and tired of your pressures to make what is immoral or downright wrong into something acceptable and legal. We are sick and tired of your attempts to rewrite history and teach appalling things in our classrooms. We are sick and tired of you trying to take items such as this article and making it into a class or racial issue when it is clearly not. We are sick and tired of you passing laws that now allow the FBI and Homeland Security to knock down our doors and make searches without probable cause and warrants (you know, your Gestapo tactics). In short, we are sick and tired of you. Don’t think this is going to happen? Think again, it’s at your doorstep and about to come busting through.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Think again my friends. Whether you are a polar bear with dwindling ice caps, or penguins, we all live on the same planet. It does not discriminate. Mother nature will react to the forces given to her whether or not your are filthy rich or super poor.

Nice try to turn this discussion on how much money you have. It just doesn't make sense at all.

  44. If the kids had been Black or poor Caucasian students protesting against poverty, I doubt if a certain company would have allowed photographers to use its building as a site from which to film them. In fact, knowing that corrupt firm and the "Scam-ily" which owns it, everything would have been done to keep an anti-poverty demonstration out of "Money-mutt Square." For that oligarchic, arrogant tribe, aesthetics--NOT ethics--must prevail. Inasmuch as poverty isn't pretty, the beauty-as-duty degener-twits wouldn't want to reminders of its existence in their vicinity.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Dear Graham, Until we build a more egalitarian socio-economic system, race and class will remain important issues. From its inception, America has been a country run well-nigh exclusively for the benefit of rich Caucasian males and a handful of their privileged females. Those of us who haven't been invited to the moolah-masters' arty-tarty party are determined to bring in a government which will shut it down and redistribute the nation's wealth. (By the way, you middle class fellows ought to wake up: the rich are using you to keep us down and do their dirty work. However, if you think they'll reward you or admit you to their club, you've got a rude awakening coming. The oligarchs will let you fight for them, even die for them, but they'll never allow you in their charmed circle.)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Dear Graham, Although my group is non-violent, there are other working class and low-income organizations out there who like guns the way you do. Pray that the coming people's government may come to power through legal, peaceful means ONLY.

  47. Back in the sixties, protesters often chanted this slogan: violence/ will teach the pigs some sense. Here's hoping that nobody ignites a firestorm. Like so many other issues, climate change arouses fierce emotions on both sides of the debate. May cool heads and warm hearts prevail!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anon 1:34: How do you define, "Just remember that the Post was actively promoting this event in the week prior.actively promoting" ?

If you mean, "the Post printed a single advance notice of an event that was planned for Monument Square" ... then guilty as charged.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Well Pete how about this? When the promotional piece about the rally first appeared on the Post homepage and for some time after it was highlighted in red print. All other headline links appeared in black print. Now Pete, when you see a list of items all in black and one in color which one are you drawn to? The Post was actively calling attention to this story over others. Therefore you are guilty as charged.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well, having been one of those proud kids in the penguin suits, I can say that the funniest part about reading some of these ludicrous comments is the fact that if you had actually gone to the rally, you could see for yourself that you're wrong; it was a culturally diverse rally. Did you see the speakers? There were just as many "culturally-diverse" as there were Caucasian. And, as for all this crock about everyone there being "rich kids with more dollars than sense," if you had been at the rally, you would've seen that most were middle and lower class. But evidently, all the "Anonymous" people like to blab on and on about things they know nothing about. Go to the Racine high schools, especially Walden, and see just how "filthy rich" some of the kids are. You might be surprised. And, don't blame us for wanting to stand up for something. If you want to go have rallies for poverty go right ahead, but let us do our thing. I don't see you guys spending weeks planning local events on the issues you bring up, so you have nothing to criticize.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Anon 12:44, there is not such thing as an egalitarian society. The society of Star Trek is never going to exist as long as you have liberals constantly perpetuating the welfare state. When the blood suckers of society are finally forced to stand up and be responsible for themselves and to contribute to society rather than suck off of it, then the rest of us who do work and contribute will give them the respect they've earned. But if your kind continually forces us to support a bunch of fat, lazy, no good bums (regardless of color and with the exception of those who are truly physically or mentally challenged), you will continue to hear rhetoric such as mine.

On a daily basis I hear more and more people voice the opinion that they have had enough and are ready to retaliate. They site the black trash, white trash and the Hispanic trash and illegals that are killing this country. They are tired of events, such as this article describes, being twisted and distorted to fit your racist, evil, socialistic agenda. Read what John Christensen says about the event and get off your hateful, racist, anti-capitalistic high horse and try to understand with that pea brain of yours what he's trying to say. I agree with many that he has been fed a crock of BS in the schools over this global warming/climate change lie. It is nothing more than a money scheme for politicians and special interest groups supported by the NEA and is being used to indoctrinate these young people into the left. He doesn't hear about the 3,100 scientist that came out a couple months ago and completely debunked the global warming lie, the schools and mainstream press refuse to report it. He doesn't get to see the "Apocalypse? NO!" video that proves global warming is a hoax put out by Chirstopher Monchton of Brenchley at the Cambridge Union because, again, the schools and mainstream press refuse to report it. The list goes on. Maybe they are mistaken, but that doesn't mean they still don't have the right to demonstrate based on their beliefs, regardless of what social class they belong to or where daddy works.

I hate liberals, national socialists, communists and anyone else who tries to undermine our constitution, even when it's our own president doing it. I would prefer to end this reign of anti-Americanism that Obama and his supporters are perpetrating on this country in a non-violent manner, but I don't see that happening. The old adage that you can't tell a liberal a thing is true. They would rather believe a lie if it is to their advantage rather than hear the truth any day.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ryan Klausch10/25/2009 5:16 PM

Graham, don't say that the other side of the global climate change debate isn't heard in schools. In Walden III high school's Ecology/Environmental Science class, both Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" and Lord Monckton's "Apocalypse NO!" are shown to students. Then, they are compared. Also, although our school is considered an official Green School, students have shared their opinions against it, and their voices have been heard. Do your research. Don't assume that we refuse to hear the other side.

I'm also surprised no one showed up at the rally to refute global climate change. Everyone was invited! Is the other side the minority? Or is it because they are only comfortable hiding under their Anonymous name tags?

Glad you were protesting as you can do under the law.

We're not even asking you to "buy into Al Gore's BS," we are merely asking that you leave us alone and stop criticizing what we think is right. If you and the rest of Racine thinks we've deluded ourselves into thinking we're making a difference, then you're entitled to your opinion.

  58. John Christensen writes:

Sorry John, but when you gathered at the public square and drew attention to yourself, you initiated a public debate. To say now that you just want to be left alone with your beliefs is a bit rich. You squandered that opportunity the moment you decided to dress up as a penguin grovelling for ice.

If you would like to debate, you can organize your own rally in Monument Square with whatever mascots you would like.

And since when did religion come into this?

    ReplyDelete
  60. John Christensen You have every right to believe what you want as I do. Open debate is the best. However as long as you present your group as rich and white that is how we will take you.
Very glad you are doing more then just being silly.

Ask your Mom this is she willing to pay 30% more for everything are you?
I understand that to achieve the 350 you wish to have that we (the world) could emit 0 Carbon for quite sometime that's NO power NO carbon based transport of any kind. Basically Stone age time. Good luck with that

    ReplyDelete
  61. Bill,
Confusion; when did we represent ourselves as rich and white? It's a pity all you've got to base your claims on is that minute picture. Like we've stated, come to the schools and see how many white people there are and how many rich kids there are. If you came to our Green School meetings on any given Wednesday of the year, you would be surprised as to how ethnically-diverse we are. And, if you actually went to the rally and saw the speakers and saw the people, you would no. I guess there's really no point in arguing this case any longer... To you, you will always be in the right, and to me, we will always be in the right. Who's to say who's right in the end? We can debate all night and never get anywhere because everyone on here is stubborn.

    Denis Navratil:

That took a lot of guts to say that to John Christensen. Who gave you the right to come off as if your views are so righteous?

These young people participated in a world wide day of organized participation (see 350.org). Did you not know they have that right? It is part of the Constitution of the United States. Are we to believe your views are supposed to be better protected than theirs by treating John Christensen with disrespect?

In my opinion, you have just squandered your chance at any credibility when you disrespect them with the statement "you decided to dress up as a penguin grovelling for ice."

You are obviously not informed. Truly! Why? Because you obviously have forgotten the most basic of laws. When ice enters the oceans and melts, it raises the levels of the oceans and changes the temperature of those oceans. Put a cube of ice into your drinking glass and see what it does to the level of that water.

    (extra lesson obviously required)

That is what is currently happening in the arctic and antarctic. What causes this? DUH, the heating of the northern and southern ice caps. Now, what do you suppose is causing that? Sure you can argue that the earth has had cyclic patterns through out it's history. But what you can not argue is the rate of melting of the ice caps has never been at the rates currently being observed. NEVER BEFORE. This has been proven. Google it. It is all there. What's worse the rate is increasing.

These observations have huge implications for future change in ocean temperature with the resulting weather pattern changes. Hence the term Global Climate Change. And because the polar ice caps are turning less white in color, additional heat is being absorbed in the polar regions, making the problem even worse.

So, Denise, you are ill informed and no longer deserving of my respect. Up until now you were simply sharing your opinion, which is your right. But you stepped over a line Denise.

    One last point...

Penguins as well as Polar Bears are the canary's in the mines. If they die, so will we. So, I hope those Penguins represented at the rally are still around in a hundred years because if they aren't our grand kids are going to be in big trouble.

  66. Hey Morons who think Global Warming is going to make winters warmer: It won't. In fact, it will make them more colder and the amount of snow will greatly increase. And these kids aren't rich! With exception from the Praire school, these school's kids can barely afford lunch everyday at school. And for you racist people, there were in fact people there who were Mexican, black, and white. But how would you know? You didn't show up, you lazy bums. It's people like you who are the cause of Global Warming because you are too lazy to do anything, even attend a simple Rally. It's nice to know that mine and my kid's future is in the hands of lazy bums like you.

  67. Wow Rees! I was making a very limited point to John Christensen, namely that one who demonstrates on the public square has forfeited the opportunity to be left alone. Nothing righteous about that Rees, just the facts of life.

Rees writes: Did you not know they have that right? It is part of the Constitution of the United States. Are we to believe your views are supposed to be better protected than theirs by treating John Christensen with disrespect?

To Reese and other readers, this is what is called a straw man argument. First you make up an argument and attribute it to your opponent, then you refute the argument. Note that I never suggested that the protesters had no right to protest. Of course they do. Reese just insinuated that I had. And how exactly did I disrespect JC? He dressed up as a penguin. I merely pointed out the fact already acknowledged by JC. So where is the disrespect?

Reese also writes: Who gave you the right to come off as if your views are so righteous?

I believe you provided the answer to that question Rees, but just in case you forgot, the Constitution allows me to express my views freely, even those not preapproved by Rees Roberts.

I just read your link Anonymous 7:27pm. It is written by James Delingpole who is not a scientist. Need I say more? According to the link provided with his name on it is what I found out:

James Delingpole is a writer, journalist and broadcaster who is right about everything. (ya right) He is the author of numerous fantastically entertaining books including Welcome To Obamaland: I've Seen Your Future And It Doesn't Work, How To Be Right, and the Coward series of WWII adventure novels. His website is www.jamesdelingpole.com

Now just how much credibility do you want to give this person versus the world wide climatologists? You can believe what you want but I know who I will believe. It certainly will not be James Delingpole.

  78. It is really sad for the city of Racine when it fails to encourage its kids who believe in something. Even if you don't agree with them and their cause, you could have shared your viewpoints in a much more positive way which could help shed a diffrent light on the issue without the attacks. These kids love the world they live in. There is only one, so what if their want to protect it? this is not about being black, white or hispanic, nor is it about being rich or poor. Why does everything always have to end up so negative. Can't we not just be proud of our kids when they are trying to do something, wheather you agree or not. It's not another headline where Racine's youth are in trouble with drugs, violence, or other issues that teens are facing. 80. The big issue isn't that the global climate is changing (the 3 degrees C number that you've heard), it's that it is changing differently across latitudes and through oceanic currents. This means that some countries are in big trouble while others are in considerably less trouble. The US and Canada will have it pretty easy well into midway through this century, but countries in the tropics will likely suffer heavily due to missed monsoon seasons and lack of water. This lack of water will translate to a lack of food and this creates a lot of tension across borders. No parent will simply watch their children starve to death, they will demand action from their governments or take it into their own hands.

Even if you don't believe in strict anthropogenic climate change, there is no doubt that changes are happening and faster than they have ever detected in the past through proxy data. The central issue is water: consider India and Pakistan, which are already at each other's throats; what will happen when the rivers they share start to dry up, as we predict they will in a decade or so? Water shortages are already causing havoc in the southern US. In Western Canada they rely on the rivers that flow from the Rockies to the Hudson Bay, or in the Western US which flow onward to the Mississippi. Those glaciers provide about half of the baseflow of these rivers, with most of the flow entering long before they reach drier areas. Those glaciers will progressively provide more and more flow until *poof* Do you think anyone will prepare for that happening before it is too late?

This is the premise of what scientists and geopoliticans are trying to get across to a constantly misled public. I can't believe how much misinformation and outright lies are spread around that would take only a few minutes of googling to correct. This isn't some giant consipracy, they're just calling it as they see it.

Just a few weeks ago, Jeanette helped raised over $20,000 with three diffrent fundrasing for less fortunate familes in Racine, families she does not even know. She has helped raised over 3,000 pairs of socks for the women and kids shealthers in Racine. Been part of cancer fundrising for many families in Racine. Since 5 years old she has been involed in her community. She gave up her lunch hour to help kids with math and reading to get up to grade level in middle school. 93. Anon 1:16 - I agree. Congratulations to Jeanette for her tireless efforts to make our community a better place. She has succeeded beyond her years and puts most of the people who post here to shame.

However none of her other efforts are any evidence whatever she knows what she's talking about when it comes to climate change (which used to be called global warming before environmentalists changed the rules in the middle of the game.)

    ReplyDelete
  94. Rees, saying, “Hence the term Global Climate Change” is ridiculous. The reason it is now being referred to as “climate change” is because the idiots that purported global warming have been proven wrong and in order to keep raping the country of its money and perpetuate the one world government they have renamed “global warming” to “climate change.” Nothing else has changed. In fact, over 3,000 scientists world wide came out a few months ago and refuted all of Al Gore’s and his cronies “facts,” thus forcing them to change the title.

John, you do have a right to assemble and state your views, whether I think it is right or wrong. But, Dennis is also right. Once you step into the spotlight, you give up any right of privacy concerning the issue or your actions in relation to it. You ask why we weren’t there to protest your view; well, for me, the simple answer is that I knew nothing about your planned activity. I read the paper every day and didn’t see it in there. I saw no mention of it anywhere else either. I very well may have been there with a protest sign had I known about it. But, I know Denis is an honorable man and as a member of LiberTEA Racine, he will honor your right to express your opinions whether he agrees with them or not. But, just because he may not agree with you on this issue does not mean he’s assaulting your right to express it. And don’t you let any of these idiot lefties try to convince you otherwise.

Ryan, there is no way you can convince me that both sides of the issue is presented in an unbiased manner in the schools. We all know about the NEA and its extremely left leaning agenda. The scientific data presented in “Apocalypse? NO!” and proof shown that Al Gore’s group exaggerates everything at least tenfold, should be enough to, if not convince you, at least give you enough doubt that this demonstration should never have taken place. When historical fact and scientific proof exists of the Middle Ages warming period, and mini-ice age that followed, is refuted as lies by Al Gore’s organization, that should be enough to make you question his theories. But, because of the bias of the schools, you are subtly convinced to believe the lie.

Anon 10:23 is either being incredibly cynical here, or is the biggest a-hole to ever post on this site.

  110. Part of the hostility is a generational problem. Some of the negative bloggers may be folks reared back in the forties and fifties, an era in which kids and their opinions counted for very little. Given that authoritarian background, those people would view the youngsters as spoiled, mouthy brats in need of a swift swat or two. Then there's the social class issue. For blue collar folks who have to struggle to survive in an increasingly-complex and hostile society, the kids' concern about ice and penguins seems frivolous and silly to the max. In addition, there's the religious issue. Among Fundamentalist Christians who believe in Dominion Theology, the earth was made by the Almighty for man's use. Since many of these sincere people also believe that the world will end soon, taking care of the planet strikes them as ridiculous. Finally, there's the widespread antipathy toward a certain corporate crime family whose members and lackeys are notorious for their support of environmental causes even though they play with dangerous chemicals in the course of manufacturing their much-touted products. (Many of the products are "green" only in the sense that they generate profits for our golden boys, girls and pampered pooches in Waxland.) Considering these factors, the negative comments were no surprise. In fact, I'm amazed and delighted that they weren't more numerous than they were.

Vikings grew grapes in Greenland, bet they could,t now.

    ReplyDelete
  114. You're absolutely right. Depending on whose book you read, the Vikings as well as the Christian Norse called several northern islands or land masses "Vinland the Good" because grapes grew there. Way back in Viking days, England had a thriving wine industry. However, once a cooling cycle called the "Little Ice Age" set in, viticulture in those places became history.

Addressing the thought that only "White" kids were there, unlike most people talking about this, I was at the rally and i sure as hell saw some minorities(quite a few to be honest, over 15-20%)at the event. Maybe Al Gore is only getting money for himself, but that doesn't mean that climate change isn't real. So why don't you put aside the fact that Al Gore is making money, and try to open your mind to the fact that there's even the slightest possibility that global climate change is real. ReplyDelete
  125. Dan,

Please get your facts right before you go spewing at your keyboard.

Al Gore did not make his money because of his involvement in Climate Change/Global Warming. How do I know this?

    Check this link:

    http://www.usatoday.com/weather/climate/globalwarming/2007-03-20-gore-solar_N.htm

Gore bought his multimillion dollar home in 2002 in Belle Meade, an exclusive city encircled by metropolitan Nashville.

He even had to fight to put solar panels on that house.

If you look up the date of his movie "An Inconvenient Truth", it was made in 2006. So, your attempt to again spew lies denies those who read what you say the Inconvenient Truth, that he made his money as a Senator and Vice President. In other words he was just a bit more deserving than you give him credit.

    Check those facts Dan.

  127. The fact remains that people ought to be more important than penguins. Until we solve this sad land's poverty problem and provide all our citizens with the necessities of life, climate change and its alleged impact on the well being of wildlife should be secondary considerations.

  128. These knuckleheads could not sell Global Warming so now it is Global Climate Change - when you can't sell this anymore, what's the next title.

  129. Alas, I'm sure the wicked Waxies or one of their six-figure flunkeys will come up with a new la-bull and promote it to the nth degree. Seriously, I wish those basically-good but misguided kids had been rallying against poverty, unnecesary foreign wars, the corporate corruption in our town or some other genuine problem amenable to correction by humanity.

It was nice to see a few of the students chime in and demonstrate to us how "informed" they are because of RUSD...and point out to us just how middle class and under priveleged they are. Add Dustin's call for us "Jackyl's" to be silent!! Very "free press" D'!

First point to John Christenson, the "penguin". Because of "Global warming" the SOUTH pole (where penguins live) the ice sheets and glacier's are in a "thickening" period. Yes the South pole is not warming! The Polar bear (who live in the Northern Hemi), population is at it's highest in recorded history. (Would that be from warming or cooling??). Is it easier for Polar Bears to get food if there is more or less ice? Polar Bears do not eat "ice" as their primary diet. They eat fish, and seals and such..so if there is less ice..they can reach more food, reproduce more and thus thrive.

Please tell me what is the perfect temperature for the planet? and if change is from the Sun..how many light bulbs must I buy to change the "climate" on the Sun?? Any of you brilliant indoctrinites wanna answer that question?? Where will we hold the "protest" for Star Climate Change?? To save the Sun?

The guy who pointed out the rivers that feed from Glaciers? I loved that!! If the Glaciers are frozen the water won't flow!! Dude!!

So here's the thing, of course the Global climate is changing and has been doing so for 6000 years or 6 Billion years, depending on your belief system. The "FACT'S" are that there is NO evidence that mankind is causing it, as I sit here and type under a 1 mile thick glacier looking out a one of the largest fresh water lakes in the world. The "Facts" are that global Warming/ or Changing goes on as the planet accommodates the ever changing population's, of plant, animal and geological effects, (read volcanic, tectonic activity).
For you RUSD brainwashed protesters I am certain that no amount of "Fact's" will shake your opinion, until you grow up just a wee bit more. You see it's fun to get all caught up in the "Fashion" of the day, and today it's "fashionable" to be all "Green" and pretentious. Remember last Fall when it was "cool" to support Obama, and now we are seeing the danger of electing an incompetent who has never made a decision, and specializes in voting "Present".
    It's frightening isn't it!

So John, when you show up and put you views in public and then insist everyone should just shut up and not offer their opinions because it hurts your pre-programmed ears. Remember your school is not giving you both sides. Al Gore hasn't been correct about one prediction, and Ocean levels have changed for millions of years.

To Rees who want's to discredit anyone who doesn't support his cause because they aren't Climatoligists, etc. Here's a newsflash.. Neither is Al Gore!

    Hmmm.
    Glaciers are masses of ice.
    Ice is frozen water.
    Therefore, glaciers are frozen.
The water still flows because they melt.
The problem is that they are melting too fast.

You need to go back to school.

Your lack of research is frightening.

    ReplyDelete
  134. What's frightening is the power of the military-industrial complex and the corrupt corporate class which controls it. Until we reign in the corporate elite and dismantle its warmongering system, we won't be able to solve our planet's manifold problems.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Amen! By the way, regulating the military industrial complex isn't a radical or commie concept--President Dwight D. Eisenhower (a staunch Republican) believed that an out-of-control military industrial complex could destroy America.

  136. Whether you perceive these kids as right or wrong is not really the issue. I do not believe in global warming, but I do know the climates change as a natural course of the planet. However, there is a history of industrial pollution, contamination by landfills, and many other forms of toxicity poisoning the planet. Whether or not it is affecting the climate is irrelevant. There is nothing wrong with these kids advocating using cleaner fuels and cleaning up our act, if for no other reason than to just make the planet a better place to live in. That attitude transcends all religious, political, racial and socio-economic boundaries.

I may not believe in your global warming cause, kids. But, I do believe you have the right to voice your opinion and there is nothing wrong with you wanting to make the planet a better place. And you know what? The hell with all the jerks that are criticizing you and putting you down. They are only showing their own ignorance.

  138. Graham-Was that last post sarcasm?

    ReplyDelete
  139. We were put on this earth to use it. When the end of times come, which should be any day now, all good "Christians have nothing to worry about. There is no need for this nonsense worrying about so-called man-made pollution. The sinners left on this earth will have to deal with that!"

This was a previous post on here, and I was just wondering-is this sarcasm or a legitimate post? With Graham's gun-wielding rants and Denis's attempts (and failings) to try and sound sensible, it's impossible to tell any more.

    ReplyDelete
  140. It certainly could be a legitimate post. In certain Christian circles, Dominion Theology enjoys considerable popularity. For believers in Dominion Theology, the earth was created for mankind to use as directed by the Lord.

  141. Anon 8:18, I don't understand how you could read sarcasm into my last remarks. No, it was not sarcasm. I truly do not believe that just because I don't agree with someone's point of view that they should not be allowed to voice it. That is what the First Amendment is all about. Why did you think I was being sarcastic?
