Postal workers protest to save Downtown post office

Members of American Postal Workers Union Local 778 picketed Tuesday outside of the Downtown Racine post office in hopes of preventing the office from closing. The Racine post office was on a list of 677 facilities around the country scheduled to close. But then the US Postal Service put out a new list of 413 potential closures that did not include Racine. There's still a risk the post office's Downtown building may close, replaced by a service center, which is why the postal workers were out Tuesday. Here's a few more photos from the protest:

  1. Based on the number of protesters, closure of the facility appears appropriate.

  2. That first picture has a little kid in it that looks school-aged. She shouldn't have been down there. The worst thing parents can do sometimes is force their viewpoints onto their children.

Hmmm...even when the Federal Government tries to not waste money, the Unions fight them. So much for being responsible citizens.

  4. The downtown post office is a great place to go when you are in a hurry and already downtown because there is never a line or waiting for service.

If the USPS wants to move the post office, how about moving it to Mt Pleasant. Then making the address Mt Pleasant WI, 53406 rather than Racine WI 53406. Mt Pleasant is where the future growth will be not downtown that could easily be serviced by Caledonia or Perry Ave.

It is called reallocation of resources. It is done all the time in the business world.

I live near and use the Downtown PO. But it makes sense to replace it with a self service center,or certainly with nothing more than a small staffed window, for special needs. But having used the self stations at the Airport, Perry Ave. and Caledonia is so much more convenient. It's a beautiful building perhaps it can have a new use, perhaps it's time to rip it down and build a nice set of Condo's in the space.. with the magnificent Lake and city views! Just make sure there is adequete parking below.

In fact lets take McMynn towers, the Parking ramp, and the Post office square and propose something fantastic for that location!! The MyMynn Low income residence can be moved away from the prime Lake view. Racine has plenty of Low income options for these folks. Subsidizing Lake View properties somehow seems wrong!

  9. The little girl in the picture (who hadn't started preschool yet) has every right to be there!! It just shows who all may be affected by closing that facility! If the Post Office were to close, her Uncle (a post office employee) may have to relocate, and she will no longer be close to her cousins and Uncle & Aunt. And viewpoints aren't being forced upon her, she simply knows she's trying to save her Uncle's job!! What's the harm in that?? People are way too judgemental...you have no idea the circumstances why she was there!! In fact, she asked to stay with her Aunt!! It's so frustrating to see these rude comments about good people! Love you Lisa!!

  10. They should be ashamed of themselves for exploiting a child for union nonsense.

  11. When I protested the war I brought my children with me. I don't ram it down their throats. They enjoyed being there and hearing people speak. I can bring them up and they can participate in things I believe in as a parent. They can choose to continue or not when they are on their own.

  12. 8:33 - you are indoctrinating them at this young age - they will have a hard time thinking on their own when they are exploited in this manner.
