2nd Time Around Softball Tourney draws a crowd

Action from Monday's co-ed 2nd Time Around Tournament at Island Park in Racine.

Forty-one teams participated in the 2nd Time Around Softball Tournament at Island Park in Racine this weekend. The annual tourney, organized by Los Compadres Sports Club, included two men's brackets, a women's bracket and a coed bracket on Monday.

Stroking It, a team sponsored by Spinnakers restaurant in Racine, won the men's closed division, which was limited to teams from Racine. They beat a team sponsored by Blue Rock tavern in the finals.

Johnny Hammers, of Milwaukee, and the Hurricanes, sponsored by the Citgo station at I-94 and Highway 20, shared the men's open division title.

In the women's division, Citgo's MTO team beat AC Auto Body in the finals.

The tournament was sponsored by Warning Track bar, 1301 Washington Ave, 2nd Time Around bar, 1922 16th St, and Dunn's Sporting Goods in West Allis.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit Los Compadres, a sports club started by Tony Perales. Los Compadres supports two women's softball teams, four men's teams, a middle school baseball team and an adult flag football team. The club is a full-time summer job for Perales, who also works for the city.

Perales said he was happy with the tournament, which benefited from near perfect weather throughout the holiday weekend. Teams came from as far as Fond du Lac, northern Illinois, Milwaukee, Delavan and Burlington to compete.

"Word is getting out," he said. "I think we'll have a bigger turnout next year."

Here's photos from Monday's first ever coed tournament, which attracted top-notch softball players from throughout southeastern Wisconsin:
