Two summer contests for local photographers

Two new photo contests opened in Racine this week.

The first is the Journal Times' "Give us your best shot," which seeks photos in three categories: nature, people or place. Top prize in each category wins $100, and the JT will publish the winners as part of its annual community calendar. Photos can have been taken anytime in the past two years. Submission deadline is June 5.

But there's a catch: It costs $10 to enter a photo, and there will be three "voting rounds" in which votes cost 50 cents apiece. Is this a photo contest or a money-raiser? You be the judge. Last year's Journal Times photo contest, Pet Idol, raised $19,000 for the JT's Newspapers In Education project which supplies daily papers to schools.

Full rules are here. Be sure to read the FAQ.

The second photo contest is a photographic Scavenger Hunt run by the Racine Camera Club. It seeks photos in 12 categories: lighthouse, insect, leaves, sky, sand, bridge, nature in the city, boat, lawn chair, shadow, reflection and flower.

Rules are not yet online, but all submissions should be photos taken this summer; they should be sized no bigger than 1024 pixels and they must be submitted by Sept. 6. Images should be named this way: lastnamefirstinitialtitle.jpg and emailed to jason.madson@gmail.com or mailed on CD or DVD to Jason Madson, 3040 Michigan Blvd, Racine, WI 53402.

There is no entry fee, and members of the camera club will choose the winners at their September meeting; prizes haven't been determined yet. Some previous Racine Camera Club competition winners are HERE, HERE and HERE.

  1. I think the JT contest is a way for them to sell the newspaper nobody buys to schools and collect the proceeds.

  2. Who ever came up with this lousy "contest" should be fired. You know they could have done it right and it could have been a great PR tool. We want money contest. Who has the richest friends? The rest of you will be screwed. We should all vote for horses asses pics and that can go in thier calendars.

  3. Having a photo contest to raise funds is fine. There's not reason to get upset, you don't have to enter it or vote if you don't like the idea. It's too bad printed newspapers are doing so bad, I enjoy reading the paper in the morning with coffee. Journalism is an important aspect of our democracy, or at least it should be.

  4. If you don't like the contest or the way it is set up do a contest yourself. If you don't have anything good to say then don't say it. I think this is a great way to get kids to read the newspapers. It's better than them stealing the paper.

  5. If you don't want to pay to enter the JT contest, enter the Racine Camera Club contest. It's free, and you will meet a group of fun people interested in photography.

  7. The JT contest is a shake down. The calendars all end up at Value village. The Camera club rocks. They should do the calendar.

  8. Thanks for the great suggestion 5/20 1:09. The group was contemplating how to utilize the favorites. Wonder how much a calendar costs to print and how they'd sell it, but it's worth looking into. By the way, there is a "catch" to this contest also--but it benefits the contestant in many ways. There is a $20.00 club dues required to enter the contest. One benefit is you get to join a creative group of photo enthusiasts who share their knowledge and camaraderie. You also get to participate in photo competitions FOR FREE! Plus educational forums will help you improve your skills and you will learn of other seminars to attend. The group meets September through May on the second Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the Racine Arts Council building, 316 Sixth St. in Racine. So collect those image categories and join in the fall! Check out our newly unveiled website at www.racinecameraclub.com. Pete, I bet you can guess who I am, but don't reveal my secret identity! (Ha Ha) Thanks for the good publicity!

  10. At the May meeting, the members decided to make membership a requirement to enter the contest. The purpose of the Photo Scavenger Hunt is to provide topics to get the creative juices flowing. It will be interesting to see the various images and interpretations.
