Silent: Court enters not guilty pleas for Becker

Gary Becker's silence told the story in court today.

The disgraced former mayor stood mute on eight charges filed against him following the Internet sex sting that nabbed Jan. 13. That left Judge Stephen Simanek to enter not guilty pleas for Becker on eight felony counts, including two new charges for possession of child pornography.

The arraignment hearing last about three minutes. Becker appeared in person with his attorney, Patrick Cafferty. District Attorney Michael Nieskes and Assistant District Attorney Bob Repischak appeared for the state.

Becker's next court appearance is scheduled for April 3. He remains out of jail on bond.

The additional child pornography charges came from a desktop computer found in Becker's car the night he was arrested at Brookfield Square Mall by agents from the Department of Criminal Investigations, Nieskes said.

The images show graphic pictures of clearly underage girls, said Nieskes, who added additional charges may be filed against Becker. Investigators are waiting to hear back from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, an agency that researches child pornography cases.

Aside from Cafferty, Becker appeared at the hearing alone.

  1. Gota ask:
    1) When will Helding return the Money that he received from Becker(it's in the campaign records)
    2) Will the new Mayor look into the Becker travel spending and how/who that money was spent? Or is the good old boy network going to cover everything up?

  17. Let me try this way:
Why will Helding not give back the funds his campaign got from the former Mayor Becker's campaign? (or if he as done so as I hope he has)tell us and why will the new mayor not investigate Becker's travel funds see if Becker owes the City money and have the DA act if needed?
Might it be because there good old boys of the Pedophile Becker? Might the travel funds scandle call into question lack of over site by say Ben Hughes and City Leaders?
And The newspaper(s) the travil fund would be a huge story so would listing all the Councilmen who may have received funds from Becker

  18. The degree of bad judgment shown by Becker is staggering. I believe this should mandate an audit of every decision he made as mayor.

  19. You want to know about where the money has gone, who's got it, if we can get it back? Want to be sure someone follows up on Becker's travel spending? If Jody Harding is elected Mayor she's got what it takes to find out, and God help anyone found stealing from the citizens of Racine.

  20. In response to John Ringo's comments: it's probable that these current council members, and previous council members that are coming out of the woodwork to run for mayor, are from the same old "what's in it for me"/tax-and-spend gang and aren't interested in further complicating heir "good buddy" Gary Becker's life.

I think it's time that anyone currently serving on the city council, or with prior service, not even be considered to run for mayor. It's time to get some new blood in there that will reduce taxes, eliminate pork projects, and start holding these politicians accountable for their actions and spending policies.

New blood is what's needed and Karas, Turner, and anyone else who has previously held a goverment position IS NOT the answer. I agree with the guy above about considering Jody Harding, or someone that refuses to do business with special interest groups.

  21. I think Jody Harding is posting kudos to herself. Jody, hon,you can't always cut, cut, cut. Sometimes you need to work with people for various reasons to get things done. I think you would be a terrible mayor for Racine.

  22. I think that instead of automatically saying so and so should be mayor, let's see the candidates put their cards on the table in black and white and show us what they are going to do to benefit Racine and not scoot using the ex mayor as an excuse. Show us what you have candidates!

  28. The way things go, Becker's bail/bond hearing will probably be a joke. He'll probably get his computer back and other things to make his life easier. Scumbag. I hear people at City Hall were happy about this going down. Some wondered why it took so long for him to be found out.
