Lumpkin running for City Council

County Board Supervisor Kenneth Lumpkin, owner of the Insider News and a four-term Racine County supervisor, told supporters he'll run for a seat on the City Council in the upcoming April election.

Lumpkin, the owner of the Insider News, is running for the Fourth District seat currently held by incumbent Alderman Jim Kaplan. Kaplan was first elected in 2006.

Lumpkin whose business and home is located in the Fourth District said his experience in business and government makes him the perfect candidate to turn-around a waning community.

“We have watched as other areas of Racine go through a new growth while our historic district slowly declines because of the lack of attention and resources,” Lumpkin said.

He said because of so many needs in the diverse and changing community, the Fourth District couldn’t afford to spend more time training leadership. The district needs an alderman with a vision of how the neighborhoods need to look decades to come, Lumpkin said.

“My strong stand against crime in our neighborhoods, economic development for the Fourth District businesses, commitment to education and proven ability to help create jobs make me the best candidate to move the Fourth District forward,” Lumpkin said.

In a District that is 67 percent minority, Lumpkin is working with Racine County Executive Bill McReynolds to design a project that will aid small minority businesses.

He added that he worked closely with the Al Gardner and the developers to bring the new Corrine Reid-Owens Square project to the Central City.

Lumpkin said his efforts will help revitalize distressed business areas like parts of Douglas Avenue and bring affordable housing to the vacant lots in the district.

“The success of bringing change will be based on weeding crime out and seeding jobs opportunity in,” Lumpkin said.

  5. What has Lumpkin done for the district as a county borad supervisor? Why hasn't he addressed the issue of jobs and crime as a county board supervisor? What is his track record as a supervisor? Someone should check his attendance record as a supervisor and a member of the city's cdbg committee. He misses more meetings than he makes. And how will Lumpkin address problem bars like Mr. Cools, Viper and others that he has defended in the past even though they drain police resources and are blights on the neighborhoods.

  6. Pardon I think that Vipers is working with the City to stop trouble. The question to ask is why is the Winner's Circle still open or why can I still see hookers working?
Is that something the City Counle can do or is that a lack of police force from budget cuts.
IE do we still have 200 police officers as we were told by the Mayor he would keep or has that number gone down

  7. not even close to 200 officers. Try more like 175-180. Some things are more important I guess (IE>> City Administrator, Park & rec director,(HUGE $$$$$$$$$ positions) (I could go on and on)

  8. I called the RPD and got a song and dance if this is true and became known could be the match that lights the recall.

  9. Maybe the Alderman should run for the County Board. Wouldn't that be something?

  10. Poor Mr. Lumpkin. He would then only have his business to run and would be out of politics for the Alderman really knows what he is doing and would definitely win both elections.

  11. Nice try anon. The department is budgeted for 199 officers. They are down some because of retirements and the guy who diddled that girl, not because of budgets. If you want more cops, tell the PFC to hire more pronto.

  12. I don't believe someone should serve on two elected bodies like that. How can he possibly give the proper attention to both positions?? Does Q.A. Shakoor? How many times does he talk about "this board" when he is at council meetings? He also misses city meetings for county obligations.

Lumpkin and Q should pick a job and stick to it.

  13. 199 is not 200 and the Mayor could have told the PFB not to hire anymore officers, interesting

Also I think Q.A. is doing a GREAT JOB now that I have taken the time to understand more about him.

  14. Colt-
I called Ald Kaplan about the Winners Circle and he is working hard to clean up that neighborhood. He is pushing for revocation of that license but a solid case needs to be built. The alderman told me the winners circle is on thin ice. How is vipers helping the city stop trouble? Look at the calls to that bar, the large number of fights and the disruptions in the neighborhood. Broken bottles, fights in the street and nosiy crowds at bar closing. It makes your gas station look mild. Get your facts straight before rambling on these blogs about stuff you dont know. Too bad we cant recall you or at least your ludicrous comments.

You really have no clue about local politics, or politics in general for that matter.

In order to recall the Mayor, you would need 5899 signatures - all properly gathered and no duplicates. You would have to file papers first and then gather the signatures within 60 days. (That is roughly 100 signatures a day.)

13211 people voted in the 2003 Mayoral election and some of them were knock and drags

5697 people voted for Becker in the Spring 2007 race where he ran unopposed.

A successful recall would be a tall order. You really think someone would go through all that work because we have 199 officers and not 200? Get a grip.

By the way, the Mayor actually cannot tell the PFC to not hire.

  16. I hope that Mr Kaplin and I have a real debate on the issues, rather than bloggers trying to pick who should lead our district into the future.
Mr. Kaplin, nor myself is perfect, but both of use is committed to make a change in the district. It just that I am the better candidate in make it happen.
I also feel that it should be left up to the people in the fouth district to decided who's best, not those that live in the 5th and 11th District.
I have been in office for eight years and I will put my records of accomplishment up against any blogger who hide behind a computer and offer lie to try and sway people feeling about this election.
Anyone that know me knows that I stand up for what I belive.
The fourth district need improvements. This is not about Mr. Kaplin. It's not about me. It's about make sure that all 1200 residents of the 4th District have open government work for them.
My doors at 1661 Douglas Avenue are always open to the community. Anyone wishing to stay anonymous can call me at 632-9370.

  17. I can not belive that if the mayor call the PFB and said .... they would not do what he asked.
as for Vipers I have sat in meetings with the owner as he and they worked on fixing the issues. If Wilber is not working in good faith then shut his place down
Yes I know there needs to be a strong case to pull Winner's Circle or any other bar. I too have talked with the Mr. K about that and other bars. I was using that as an example of other bars that need to be delt with. OTOH if the city can not pull City Haul I guess all most anything can go down in a bar.
We need to be quit being scared of the Racine Bar Owners

To recall the Mayor (something I have no come out for) you would need two things issues and a leader to run.
    Issues I think we have:

    Gutting of the Fire Dept
    Not keeping 200 Police officers
    Gutting MIS
A no bid 300,000+ Contract on outside contractor
Firing of the ONLY Female Hispanic dept head and having her walked out of City Hall
The War on the Park and Req Department.
    The Uptown art Program
The Civil cases the Mayor has brought on the City:
Former MIS Dept Suing for there jobs
Former HR Director sueing (that one may not be filed but settled out of court)
A soon to be former City worker sueing for hostal workplace

So you have the cause and I think that the Inercity and Hispanic population would go for this
I think the police and fire unions would go for this
If we could get the Smith's out of the Ice Cream they would buy in

    But would would Run?
    Karas?
    Q.A.?
    Sheilds?

But all this is moot. I belive by 8/08 our Mayor will be moving on the a better job.
