Racine Raiders stay undefeated with 17-0 victory

Raiders Rush for 232 Yards; Intercept Six Passes

The Racine Raiders (4-0, 2-0 NAFL) relied heavily on their opportunistic defense in a 17-0 win over the River City Rough Riders (0-5, 0-4 NAFL) Saturday afternoon in North American Football League (NAFL) action in West Salem.

The defense came down with six interceptions, including three inside the Raiders' 20-yard line, en route to the victory. They also recorded three sacks.

Linebacker Nate Harris (Carroll College) and safety Torie Ruffin (Concordia University) each picked off two passes while defensive back Philip Despopolous (Broken Bow HS) and linebacker Zach Pedersen (North Central College) each came down with one interception.

Meanwhile, linebacker Will Caldwell (Grand Valley State University) had 1-1/2 sacks, with Pedersen also recording a sack. Defensive lineman Brandon Rogers (Tennessee State University) also got in on the action with half a sack.

The defense held the Rough Riders to 94 total yards. River City has now been shutout in each of their last three games.

The Raiders, who were the top rushing team in the NAFL entering this week, rushed for 232 yards. Bryan Jennings, Jr. (Vermillion Community College), second in the league in rushing and tied for first in touchdowns scored, rushed for 152 yards on 18 carries, an 8.4 yard per carry average, and one touchdown, a 37-yard scamper with 11:09 to play in the first half that gave Racine a 10-0 lead.

The only other touchdown came less than a minute into the fourth quarter on a two-yard sneak by quarterback Stephen Jackson (Rochester Community College), which was setup by a 34-yard pass to wide receiver Charles Ownes (Eastern Illinois University).

The Raiders still struggled with their passing attack again Saturday. Virgil McNeil (Wisconsin), Ron Ricciardi (Florida State University), and Jackson all took snaps in the game.McNeil completed just 2 of 9 passes for 3 yards and was intercepted once. Jackson was 1-for-3 for 34 yards and Ricciardi went 1-for-4 for just 3 yards.

The Raiders return home next week to play the Gateway (MO) Soul (5-3, 4-2 AFL) of the Alliance Football League (AFL). The Soul are in the midst of a three game winning streak entering tonight's game and lead their division. They are ranked sixth in theAFL, a 23-team league.

The game starts at 7 p.m. at Historic Horlick Field (1648 North Memorial Drive, Racine). The Boy Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps will perform at halftime.

Raiders tame Lions, 34-10

Jennings, Taylor, Miles Star for New Look Raiders

With over half the roster being new, including three of the four quarterbacks, Racine Raiders head coach John Mamerow and his staff are truly looking to see how players perform in the preseason. The icing on the cake is a win.

Despite a slow start, including being down 3-0 at the end of the first quarter and winning 7-3 at halftime, the Raiders were able to pull away from the Leyden Lions in Melrose Park, Ill., Saturday and walk away with a 34-10 victory.

The Lions scored first and scored last, but everything in between was all Racine as they dominated the scoreboard and the stats, holding Leyden to 89 total yards and just five first downs. Leyden nearly had as many penalty yards, 77, as they did total yards.

The Raiders got notable performances out of veteran running backs Bryan Jennings, Jr. (10 rushes for 56 yards and a TD) and J.R. Taylor (10 rushes for 46 yards and two TDs).

Taylor, an undrafted rookie free agent for the Green Bay Packers out of Eastern Illinois University in 2003, came to the Raiders following the announcement that the Kane County Eagles would not field a team this season.

Wide Receiver Justin Miles, another former Eagle who played collegiately at St. Norbert's College, hauled in four passes for 103 yards and a touchdown from quarterback Chris Walsh (3-5, 54 yards). Walsh also had a 15-yard touchdown run in the game.

Punter Mike Morrison, who also handled kicking duties because Ben Aguilar is still playing indoor football, averaged 47 yards per punt and successfully converted four of five extra point attempts.

The Raiders amassed 286 total yards (130 passing, 156 rushing) in the victory.

The Raiders open Historic Horlick Field next week to play the Kilbourn City Hawks, a team out of the Wisconsin Dells area that play in the Mid-States Football League. The Raiders are having a "Recession Buster" special where all adult and senior tickets purchased at the gate will cost just $5. The Kilties Drum and Bugle Corps will perform at halftime. The game begins at 7 p.m. and the gates open at 5:30 p.m. Free parking is available in lots and on city streets around Historic Horlick Field.

Raiders open season with a 41-8 win

The Racine Raiders had some frustrations to take out Saturday night after suffering a lopsided defeat to the Detroit Seminoles last week at Historic Horlick Field. Interstate 94 rivals, the Milwaukee Marauders, were unfortunate enough to be the Raiders' opponent.

The Raiders made a statement on the opening kickoff as Rick Hutchins, a high school and college track star, found an opening down the Marauders' sideline and returned the kick 82 yards for a touchdown. New kicker Ben Aguila added the point-after and the Raiders had a quick 7-0 lead.

On one of their first plays from scrimmage, Marauders' quarterback Virgil McNeil threw the ball right to Raiders' cornerback Eric Feest who returned the ball to the Marauders' six-yard line. Raiders' quarterback Shawn Kain found wide receiver Dorian Palmer in the corner of the endzone on the next play for a quick 14-0 lead after the converted extra point.

Both teams' offenses seemed to stall a bit, aided by excellent defense. Neither team would find the endzone again until the second quarter when Kain hit wide receiver Sam D'Alie on a one-yard TD pass. The extra point was good and the Raiders led 21-0 with 4:33 to play in the half.

Several miscues by the Marauders gave the Raiders the ball back and they capitalized on a 25-yard field goal by Aguilar just before the two-minute warning.

Frustration seemed to set in for the Marauders as they decided to run the ball four straight times, including on fourth and three in their own territory, which they didn't convert, giving the Raiders the ball in great field position. With no timeouts remaining, Kain forced a pass into the endzone with no time on the clock and it was intercepted by cornerback Mike Harrison to end the half with the Raiders leading 24-0.

The Raiders were first to strike in the second half when Kain found Palmer streaking down the sideline for a 33-yard TD. Aguilar's extra point landed on High Street and the Raiders led 31-0 with 8:45 to play in the third quarter.

The Raiders would score again on a Bryan Jennings, Jr. one-yard TD run with 3:15 left to play in the third. The run was set up by a screen pass from backup quarterback Ricky Irby Jr. to Jennings that went for 61 yards.

The Raiders would score again just a few minutes later off the left foot of Aguilar, who booted a 42-yard field goal just 30 seconds into the final quarter.

The Raiders' defense tried to hold onto to their second shutout of the season, but the Marauders were able to put together one drive that culminated in a McNeil four-yard TD pass to running back Demetrius Thompson in the back of the end zone with 8:10 left to play. The Marauders went for the two-point conversion and McNeil was able to run the ball in to convert, making the final score 41-8.

The game was taped by Time Warner Cable Sports channel 32. It will first air on Monday, July 14, at 7 p.m. Fans can also check the Time Warner Cable website for additional dates. The game will also be available on Wisconsin-on-Demand, Channel 1111, beginning on Wednesday, July 16.

So did they win? I hear you asking... Well, the score at halftime was Raiders, 28; Rochester Giants, 0, which also was the final score. A perfect start for the Raiders' 56th season.
