Racine Gang Task Force receives national awards

The Greater Racine Gang Task Force was recognized by the F.B.I. Safe Streets Violent Gang Initiative Conference in Austin, Texas on July 29.

The National Safe Streets Initiative and the F.B.I. identified the top 30 violent gang investigations from across the country for 2009 and selected The Greater Racine Gang Task Force 11th among the 30 investigations. The F.B.I. also ranked the Greater Racine Gang Task Force No. 2 in the North Central Region, which includes Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The Greater Racine Gang Task Force conducted an investigation targeting gang members who had been involved in violent crimes (aggravated assault, firearms violations, robbery, attempted murder and murder). This investigation began in 2007 and concluded in 2009. The investigation resulted in 57 gang members being arrested and federally prosecuted. The result of this effort has been a significant drop in violent crime and homicides in the Racine.

The recognized investigations identified, disrupted and dismantled violent street gangs, prison gangs or outlaw motorcycle gangs. The investigations were sustained, proactive and coordinated investigations resulting in successful prosecutions.
