Half a million dollars in federal funds have been awarded to Gateway and Parkside, their portion of more than $7 million in grants to help first generation, low-income and disabled Wisconsin students succeed in college.
The TRIO Student Support Services grants went to 22 state colleges and universities, according to Sens. Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold.
UW-Parkside received $300,038 and Gateway Technical College's three campuses will divide up $219,957.
The program aids students with tutoring and mentoring. The Department of Education said the programs must provide academic tutoring; guidance in course selection; assistance with financial aid programs and scholarships; financial and economic literacy counseling; help with admission to graduate and professional programs; and enrollment assistance for students transitioning from two-year institutions to four-year programs.
