2009 Racine Bike Jam
We're a few days late with these, but here are some photos from the 2009 Bike Jam on Saturday at the Pershing Park Skate Park in Racine. The 12th annual event was organized by Kuko Padilla, the Racine native who has been maintaining the park (often spending his own money to do so) since it opened in 1998. To get an idea of Padilla's relationship to the park, the 35-year-old and his wife Becky were married on top of one of the skate ramps. Becky and Kuko were at the Bike Jam on Saturday grilling food and running the small concession stand. It was a great day ... congratulations to Padilla on another successful jam!
Here are some photos from Saturday afternoon:

Great time!
ReplyDeleteMr. Padilla,
ReplyDeletePlease call me at 884-9800 x 502. I would like to make a donation to your cause.
Congrats!

Time for the Nanny State to step in and mandate all sorts of safety gear and clothing - too many people having too much fun. Must give the politicians something more to control or tax.
ReplyDeleteThey all look like Ivy League prospects to me!
ReplyDeleteAnon 9:02 - Did you go to the Ivy League?
ReplyDeleteDustin - yes as a matter of fact I did - so what's your point. These kids are punks that will go no where, so let's make a big deal out of their activities. Why not cover stories of activities of students with great futures. Those that excel in school, those that volunteer to make the city a better place, Thoes that will be the future leaders of our community.
ReplyDeleteIvy Leaguer - Let us know the groups and activities you're working with to improve the community and we'll be happy to write about them.
ReplyDeleteDon't take your miserable childhood out on the children of Racine. Go practice piano some more.
ReplyDeleteWe are not in Rhode Island. We have a real situation with obesity. I think it is great that these children are involved in physical activity.
Wow, How judgmental and ignorant of you to assume all those children don't volunteer or help in their community. I know a dozen who do. They serve meals at the community dinners, they help plant gardens, and pick up litter. They are Girl scouts and boy scouts. I am embarrassed for you.
ReplyDeleteIt is really sad that you would make judgments of others based on appearances or the hobbies they enjoy.
You should really go there and try to get to know those young people. The things they are doing are a bit scary and take real physical talent. They are achieving goals and overcoming obstacles. They help each other learn to use the equipment too.
Dustin, It's not about me, but to answer your question I am on two boards for non profits which includes working on many fundraising events and provide support for agencies that offer wonderful services to Racine. I belong to a civic organization which includes volunteering for a number of worthwhile causes and volunteer to hlep other non profits in their fundraising activites. Now to get to the real point - let's see you run articles on those young individuals as I said before that have a positive impact on out community - role models, not punks.
ReplyDelete10:11 - I suggest they achieve goals that make a difference in their life and please point out the individuals in the photo's that are involved in the activites you claim they are involved in and lastly how many of them will graduate from high school and go on to college. My guess is less than 10%.
ReplyDeleteWhy is there so much vitriol in so many comments on so many blogs?
ReplyDeleteIs it simply that the taxpayers are fed up with supporting the non-taxpayers?
There are way too many people who have no skin in the game and thus have no reason not to vote for more give-aways.
Role model = no hobbies
ReplyDeleteYou sound miserable. How can you really believe even your precious role models don't enjoy skateboarding?
It is just like football or soccer. They have to learn a skill and get good at it. Are people who play football and soccer punks too? Should all children be at home playing video games or surfing the net?
A lot of local boards are ineffective and filled with negative people. They whine and micromanage. I have a hard time believing the boards you are on are doing much. You refuse to see reason and discount a lot of the community based on a hobby they happen to enjoy. Calling them names like punks.
Wow, all that based on a photo and the type of hobby they enjoy. I will ask you what does a decent citizen look like?
ReplyDeleteThat is epitome of intolerance
and ignorance.
The bikes and skateboards they use are expensive to maintain and also take time and responsibility to care for. Being able to care for possessions is a good character trait.
Well at least the tax payers are not having to cover the cost of Mr. Padilla and because of this article 2 or more people have come forward to lend support to him. That is GREAT!
We're happy to run those stories and we often rely on readers and people connected to nonprofits to tip us off about positive and helpful people and events in the community. So if you know of anything we should be writing about, please let us know at: racinepost@gmail.com
ReplyDelete10:26 - calling them as I see it - Since no one can identify the activities that these punks are involved in that have a positive impact on the city and because you like to take shots at non profits that make a positive impact on the community, I'm done with you and this subject.
ReplyDeleteDustin - in addition of the ad for Family Services Taste of Racine on the website - why not contact them and run an article on the 11th year of TOR and their 100 year anniversary.
ReplyDeleteGood idea! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDustin - here's another one for you - the non-profit agency Society's Assets which provides in-home services for people with disabilities and seniors in Racine, Kenosha and Walworth Counties is celebrating their 35 anniversay this summer.

ReplyDeleteOnce again proof that education does not equal intelligence.
No rapes at this event??
ReplyDeleteAlso, did he have a permit to sell food?
They mess with the hot dog endor and his cart, but this is OK??
This city is blazin' to hell faster than I thought.
God save us, please!!!
Rapes? What are you talking about? And, yes, he had a permit for the food.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that C4C didn't show up and try to disrupt, sorry, meant shove their opinions down the throats of everyone there, sorry again, I really meant offer up opinions on everything else other than biking and skating.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had that sort of skate park to use when I was growing up. Fear I am too old now to learn new tricks.
